The Dynastic Chair – Self Portrait

Artist Amit Ambalal (born 1943)

dated 1986, Oil on canvas
29.5 x 29.5 in. (74.9 x 74.9 cm.)

This self-portrait by Amit Ambalal, is a deeply personal and subtly humorous reflection on the artist’s inner conflict and eventual liberation. Born into a prominent textile mill-owning family in Ahmedabad, Amitbhai was expected to continue the family legacy as the mill’s managing director. However, his lifelong passion for painting eventually led him to break away from business. In 1979, he sold the mill and embraced art as his true vocation.

In this work, he depicts himself seated at a polished desk in formal attire – occupying the symbolic “Director’s Chair.” His expressionis one of bemused contemplation. Behind him are painted portraits of his family predecessors, whose solemn gazes add to the weight of inherited duty. The stylized figures and exaggerated features reveal his signature style, combining satire, caricature, and subtle wit.

Amitbhai’s art often blurs the lines between humor and philosophy. Influenced by Indian miniature traditions, his work reflects on the absurdities of modern life with charm and insight. This self-portrait is both an introspective turning point and a quiet declaration of artistic independence.

In Amitbhai’s own words ‘While sitting on the Managing Director’s chair, a position that was held in the family since my great grandfather’s time, I wondered if I would have to continue with it or will I be able to pursue my inner calling.”
