Shrimant Peshwa Balajirao popularly known as Nanasaheb, was the third Peshwa and the last to be an appointed Peshwa (next one, Madhav Rao, was the first hereditary Peshwa). During his tenure, the Chhatrapati (Emperor) was reduced to a mere figurehead. He managed to extend the Maratha Empire into most of North-West, East and Central India. He also contributed to the development of Pune which was the seat of the Peshwas.
