Popularly known as India’s “Joan of Arc”, Rani Laxmibai is remembered for her valour during the Indian Mutiny of 1857–58 from the British Raj. She was the queen of the Maratha princely state of Jhansi (currently in Uttar Pradesh) from 1843 to 1853 as the wife of Maharaja Gangadhar Rao. Her childhood name was ‘Manikarnika’ and she later became a symbol of resistance for freedom fighters.
